Drink with us in Hemingway's favourite Madrid haunts

Insider's Hemingway Tour

“When you get to know it, Madrid is the most Spanish of all cities, the best to live in, the finest people, month in and month out the finest climate.” -Ernest Hemingway in Death in The Afternoon (1932)

This great American novelist and journalist spent some of the best days of his life in Madrid – from his earliest visits as a young aficionado of the bullfights, to his dangerous reporting assignments on the front lines of the Spanish Civil War, to his later nights out with Hollywood stars at the city’s most glamorous cocktail lounges.

Our Hemingway Tour visits some of his favourite corners of the capital. These include classic beer halls, elegant hotel lounges, cave-like basement bars and the oldest restaurant in the world. Many of these places were immortalised in his books. Most have barely changed since the author ate, drank and wrote within their walls. Over three hours we will hear stories from his life and times and hit all the spots the man himself would have taken us to.

Can’t stop talking about how much we enjoyed the Hemingway Tour! Stephen was great! Very knowledgeable about Hemingway’s time in Madrid, but the tour is much more than that. It is a wonderful way to see the city, experience places you would likely not know about, and have a blast while doing it! Would highly recommend to anyone visiting Madrid!

A fascinating look around Hemingway’s old stomping ground, great for old fans and new. Stephen is very knowledgeable about all aspects of Hem’s writing and his time in Madrid. Felt transported back in time! It’s incredible to see that these old haunts are still hidden away, and this was a wonderful way to discover places that we’d hoped to find but could never have on our own. Stephen was a lovely guy and would recommend him and his colleagues to any Hemingway fans or travelers in Madrid.

If you are interested in Old Madrid, you must have dinner at Restaurante Sobrino de Botín. Founded in 1725, it is listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the oldest restaurant in the world. It certainly has walls that can talk. Our Botín Experience is not to be missed.
