The Five Senses: An Art Tour***

Visual art is not only for the eyes, and neither is this virtual tour. Veteran Madrid-based art historian Teresa de la Vega guides you through some of the finest pieces in the city’s grand museum collections with an equal focus on the other senses. You will see, hear, and feel how great painters and sculptors can bring out the textures of skin and cloth, the invisible effects of music, and even the flavour of the food on banquet tables in historical scenes from centuries ago. Masterpieces by Bosch, Rubens, Rembrandt and Goya are just some of the works you will discover on this adapted tour.

To enhance the experience, and take full advantage of the digital medium, the tour also floats over the rooftops and perfumed botanic gardens of Madrid, and diverts into the centuries-old tapestry factory where you can almost touch the woven fabric that so many Spanish artists have worked into their own creativity. En route, you’ll also enjoy Teresa’s carefully selected soundtrack, from the concert of Aranjuez to a piece by Boccerini, and taste a good wine or two that pair perfectly with the imagery. Recent months have closed us off from the sensations that make life worth living, but as Teresa says, “great art is like an open window to the variety and beauty of the world”, and on this occasion your browser window can work the same way …

A word on your guide, Teresa de la Vega…

On her guided tours of Madrid’s great art museums, Teresa de la Vega can tell you everything you need to know about the masterpieces and the lesser-known gems in each collection. More importantly, perhaps, she can communicate her passion for those works in such a way that you find yourself sharing that enthusiasm. “Terete” is one of those rare art historians who can take you beyond the mere facts of a painting – the life of the artist, their social context, their materials and methods – and help you actually see and feel it to its full effect.

A graduate in American Anthropology, Ancient History and Art History from Madrid Complutense University, Teresa has spent her whole professional life in service of tourism and the promotion of culture. She is a certified guide to the art institutions of Madrid, from the Prado, to the Thyssen-Bornemisza to the Reina Sofia museums and beyond. Teresa has worked with a range of organisations and even guided the guides with courses on Floral Painting, Colour, Beauty and the Body, and The Correspondence between Painting and other Arts.

*** In 2019, her extraordinary self-designed tour Madrid With The Five Senses was awarded the coveted first prize for “Madrid’s Best Guided Visit”. ***

A delightful Prado Tour

Joanna Wivell of Insider’s Madrid Tours is an excellent organizer. About a year before our trip, I contacted her about several tours that she offered. She was quick to answer and supply lots of extra information. We ( 2 couples) decided on a tour of the Prado. Joanna set up the tour with Teresa. Teresa is an enthusiastic and personable art lover. She quickly steered us through the crowds to the most important art of the museum. She explained in detail and with some humorous stories the history of the art. Our time at the Prado flew by and we were enthralled every minute. If you are in Madrid and have some free time, you can’t go wrong with Joanna and her excellent staff.

Prado Tour with Teresa

Teresa gave a wonderful tour of the Prado. Teresa is well-versed in art history. She gave us an excellent tour of the Prado, hitting the highlights and explaining the nuances and implications of the most significant paintings. We are not art experts and she made everything so interesting. Her wealth of knowledge was topped only by her delightful personality. I would recommend this tour to anyone regardless of their level of art experience.

Excellent private walking tour

We really enjoyed an extensive private walking tour with Teresa, arranged by Meg, and customised to our interests. Teresa was able to answer all our questions and told us a great deal about so many of the interesting sights and the fascinating history of Madrid.

During the 4 hours we walked a great deal but had lots of opportunities to stop and discover the unusual and beautiful aspects of the city.
